One of the best ways to support MADD is by volunteering to help this worthwhile organization meet its noble mission of eliminating impaired driving.  Volunteers with MADD raise awareness of drunk driving and underage drinking, as well as provide support to the victims of these senseless crimes. Trained Victim Advocates Trained victim advocates support MADD by providing emotional support to the victims of impaired driving.  Many people are unaware that the victims of crimes perpetrated by impaired drivers extend well beyond the person who was killed or injured.  Their family and friends also suffer, whether it is dealing with the loss of a loved one or the aftermath of traumatic injuries suffered after a crash.  Victim advocates help guide victims and their families through the confusing criminal justice system. Public Policy Another way that volunteers support MADD is through the public policy department, working to strengthen existing laws and enact new ones designed to protect the public from impaired drivers.  These volunteers successfully persuaded lawmakers into increasing the minimum legal drinking age to 21 in many states and lowering the blood alcohol content limits from 0.10 to 0.08.  In addition, many volunteers monitor court cases and report the outcomes to the community and media in an effort to ensure that drunk drivers are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Victim Impact Panels If you have been affected by a drunk driver, you can support MADD by sharing your story with schools, civic groups, clubs, and other organizations.  Many attendees at these types of events say that the stories of those who were victimized by an impaired driver had an impact on their lives.
