Zoloft is a prescription antidepressant used to treat anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. 
In addition, the drug has been prescribed to women to reduce the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, including mood swings, bloating and breast tenderness. Zoloft, or the generic, sertraline, has been linked to side effects, some of which may be serious or life threatening. Side Effects Some of the side effects of Zoloft are more annoying than dangerous, including nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, loss of appetite and gas or bloating. However, other side effects are much more serious, including seizures, hallucinating, abnormal bleeding and blurred vision. Even more serious, there have been instances where people who took Zoloft had increased thoughts of suicide, and some have actually committed suicide while taking the drug. Birth Defects The Food and Drug Administration classifies Zoloft as a “Class C” drug, indicating that the drug may potentially harm an unborn child if taken by a pregnant mother. Birth defects such as serious congenital heart defects have been linked to the use of Zoloft during pregnancy. In addition, recent studies show a link between persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns and Zoloft taken in the last half of the pregnancy. Lawsuits There have been a number of lawsuits filed and won by people who were injured after taking Zoloft. In many cases, patients suffered significant side effects that were not included in Zoloft’s warning label, including the suicidal tendencies. In some cases, those taking Zoloft exhibited violent or homicidal behaviors, leading to drastic consequences. Others exhibited muscle spasms, motor or sensory problems, and problems with sex drive or performance, and many times the patient was not warned of these potential side effects before taking the drug.
