Three big automakers—BMW, Chrysler and Mazda—issued recalls on several models recently due to safety issues. Power brake failure, software glitches and uneven door surfaces in the vehicles could cause severe injury or even death if the problems are not addressed. BMW Brake Problem BMW announced it was recalling over 76,000 vehicles, manufactured between 2012 and 2014, due to potential power brake failure in those models. The carmaker says that an interruption in oil flow to part of the braking system could result in the loss of power braking assistance. The manufacturer claims the brakes will still work, but drivers will need to press harder to bring the car to a stop, potentially reducing stopping distance between other vehicles or objects. Chrysler Software Glitch Chrysler says that approximately 142,000 pickups and SUVs are being recalled due to software glitches that could cause problems with the braking system and instrument cluster lighting. The recall includes approximately 132,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs and almost 11,000 RAM pickups manufactured for the 2014 model year. The software glitch could cause warning lights to randomly illuminate or the cluster lights to black out. The same software controls anti-lock braking and stability control, so those systems could be affected as well, should the software malfunction. Mazda Door Problem Approximately 161,000 Mazda midsize cars are being recalled because the doors may open while the car is in motion. The problem affects Mazda 6 vehicles manufactured between 2009 and 2013, and is caused by uneven door surfaces or improper door tightening performed at the factory. Owners will be notified by mail if their vehicle is included in the recall. Although there have been no reports of injury or accidents related to these recalls, the potential exists for serious injuries, or even death, if one of these vehicle parts malfunctions.
